On behalf of Kelowna City Council, I am pleased to support the Wheels for Change campaign that will ride through Kelowna on Saturday, July 7^th, 2007. The Wheels for Change ride provides an excellent opportunity for British Columbians to proactively call for stronger action against climate change.

Like many other British Columbians, the City of Kelowna is concerned about climate change and committed to doing our part to reverse this potentially disastrous problem. In an effort to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions the City of Kelowna has implemented many exciting green initiatives. Particularly, we are encouraging our citizens and employees to use alternative, eco-friendly transportation, such as hybrid vehicles, public transit and our extensive network of bike lanes.

I am pleased that Kelowna has been chosen as an important stop for Wheels for Change Bike Tour, and am looking forward to meeting all those involved in this exciting journey!

Reducing climate change that is a direct result of human generated carbon emissions is an issue of which we all need to take ownership. Because I am an Olympic Rower who spends most of his time training outside and on the water, consequences of climate change are evident to me on a regular basis. If we as humans do not take action, I dread after-effects like rising sea levels or the disrupted migration, feeding and mating patterns of birds, fish and other water animals. As a result, I try to buy local, have a energy efficient house, bike or walk my errands, and drive using biodiesel.

Barenaked Ladies would like to offer our support and encouragement to everyone involved with and taking part in Wheels For Change 2007. Promoting cycling, especially in urban areas, is not only a healthy but an environmentally sound mode of transportation. This is incredibly important and we fully endorse the ideas and motives behind Wheels For Change. If we could tour on bikes we would, but instruments are heavy so instead we've taken steps towards greening our footprints as best we can by fueling our trucks and buses with bio-diesel. We also will offset CO2 with wind energy donations, and adhering to strict recycling habits among many other environmentally proactive initiatives. Ride safe and good luck everyone!!
